OpenWorld Learning students at the Click on Us! event 2009
With almost 200 people in attendance, OpenWorld Learning's 4th annual Click on Us! Gala was a success! Throughout the evening's reception, guests interacted with students from Kepner Middle School, Archuleta and Castro Elementary schools. The students passionately shared their MicroWorlds and Robotics projects with politicians, principals, and many leaders of our community.
This year's event netted $65,000 to support the programs and impact that OpenWorld Learning is making in the lives of children.

Every year many at-risk students head back to school without the necessary tools to be successful. Prior to the start of the 2009-2010 school year OpenWorld Learning collected donations of time, materials, and monies to make a difference in the lives of our students by providing students enrolled in the programs with school supplies. Everything from pencils to calculators were collected or purchased through donations and delivered to students. Several OpenWorld Learning Staff members and IHS volunteers put the supplies together to give out at schools with OpenWorld Learning. This campaign was a success and we look forward to continuing this tradition.

Denver-CAMP students at Skinner Middle School were all smiles.
Summer programming is statistically crucial for low-income children. It is crucial because research shows that academic achievement gaps are significantly widened without such opportunities.
Two 2007 Johns Hopkins University studies show that year-long academic gains are close to equivalent for low-income and more advantaged children. However, from the time school lets out for summer and fall classes begin, advantaged youth experience gains in academic achievement whereas low-income students either plateau or suffer a loss in academic achievement. While this is bad news, it is also an opportunity for OpenWorld Learning to help meet another documented need for youth in our community. This research adds to the growing body of evidence that out-of-school time is crucial for youth development.
