Father and Son Celebration at Ellis Elementary

Burak and his family came to Denver from Turkey. Burak recently experienced a wonderful day in the OpenWorld Learning program because he had just passed his intermediate level. Every OpenWorld Learning student who reaches the intermediate level receives a donated computer for home use. Site leader Augusta Featherston presented a computer to Burak for his achievement. When Burak’s father collected him from school that day, he was confused, thinking that the computer might be a gift. When Augusta explained that Burak actually earned the computer due to his hard work and dedication, his father was obviously moved. He dropped to one knee, held his son’s head in his hands and said, “Son, I’m so proud of you, congratulations!” The progress that Burak has made is incredible.

OpenWorld Learning Expanding in 2007

OpenWorld Learning’s goal is to add 5 new schools this fall – allowing us to grow from 10 to 15 sites! The schools, to be named later this month, will be in Denver, Boulder, and possibly Adams counties. The number of OpenWorld Learning sites we will open depends on donations received by May. Please consider becoming an OpenWorld Learning Site Sponsor. Remember, contributions made by Colorado residents are eligible for the Colorado Childcare Contribution Tax Credit. For more information, please visit the “How You Can Help” section of the OpenWorld Learning web site at www.openworldlearning.org or contact OpenWorld Learning’s Chief Operating Officer, Barb Youmans, at 303-744-1899.

OpenWorld Learning Spring Session a Success at Doull Elementary

The OpenWorld Learning Spring session at Doull Elementary has been a great success. Two talented fifth graders, Steven and Samantha, completed their advanced level projects and received brand new digital cameras. This work involves a great deal of creativity and perseverance and we are very proud of their efforts. Many Doull students have also finished wonderful projects to pass their intermediate level certifications. Diverse projects and research have focused on: Anne Frank, football, ferrets, loss of a family member, Hitler and Rebelde. Please consider a site visit to view the creations firsthand!
