Managing Director

OpenWorld Learning is a nonprofit education organization whose mission is to support children’s school success by tapping the power of digital technology and peer teaching to develop leadership and ignite a love of learning. Founded in 2000 the organization has grown from providing services to students in a single location to serving almost 700 students annually throughout the metro-Denver area. OpenWorld’s vision is to become a national organization recognized for its innovative programs that support at-risk youth and teaches them the skills necessary to be successful both today and throughout their lifetimes. Currently, OpenWorld Learning is looking for a full-time Managing Director to lead the financial and development areas of the organization. The Managing Director will report to the CEO. This position requires someone with the ability to learn all aspects of organizational management and leadership, including playing a key role in the development and implementation of organizational direction and strategy.

Overview: Provide leadership and oversight for financial and business operations including development efforts. Focus on fundraising will demand a candidate with a proven track record that demonstrates successful prior results. Requires an innovative thinker who is able to ensure systems and procedures are in place to support all business efforts.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead fund development in a manner that is in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision, and plans
  • Lead fundraising efforts and manage day-to-day development functions to ensure organizational fundraising goals are met
  • Develop solicitation programs that will enable OpenWorld Learning to attract, retain, and motivate donors while building a balanced funding mix to include individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Solicit major gifts and corporate donors together with the CEO and Board of Directors
  • Supervise Media & Donor Relations Manager whose responsibilities currently include donor engagement, event management, public relations, foundation solicitation, and materials development
  • Develop and maintain financial systems including cash disbursements and receipts, cash flow monitoring, budget creation and compliance, payroll system management, and monthly reporting
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Leadership Team
  • Oversee annual audit, including all preparation and reporting requirements
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards
  • Supervise Business Manager whose responsibilities currently include accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, reporting, database management and overall administrative support for the leadership team
  • Design and lead volunteer program to support field operations and organizational needs
  • Assist in marketing, sales, and management of OpenWorld’s licensed program, TechStudio
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3-5 years development and/or sales experience for a medium to large organization in the local area
  • Finance expertise with solid understanding of the nonprofit accounting requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software
  • Self-starter, comfortable with taking initiative and eager to be part of a dynamic team

Business Manager

Overview: To assist organization in all areas of operations by providing support through oversight and coordination of special projects, systems and vendor management, and overall office management while assuring day-to-day administrative and clerical tasks are accomplished. Responsible for management of all aspects of accounting within the organization to include: reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank deposits and reconciliations, and other financial duties.

Reports To: Operations Director

Job Responsibilities:
  • Develop and/or maintain financial systems including: cash disbursements and receipts, cash flow monitoring, budget creation and compliance.
  • Perform bookkeeping functions including: accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, cash management, and reconciliation of bank and credit statements.
  • Perform payroll and associated functions including: hours collection, data entry, paid-time-off tracking, benefits management, and expense reporting; work closely with payroll company to ensure accuracy of payroll information.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting to OpenWorld Learning Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee; prepare other reports as requested.
  • Maintain records according to generally accepted accounting principles and traditionally accepted nonprofit accounting methods; ensure proper allocation of expenses within defined classes and accounts.
  • Work with auditor to prepare independent audit report and Form 990.
  • Manage all vendor relationships assuring the best services, the most reasonable cost, and accurate and timely invoicing.
  • Work closely with school districts and parents around program fee and tuition management.
  • Manage offices including: space management, administrative and clerical duties, supply acquisition and inventory management, and meeting coordination.
  • Coordinate and participate in special projects and events as the need arises.
  • Assist Leadership Team to assure ongoing operational support needs are met, including: drafting, editing, and proofreading correspondence and documents, general office support, meeting coordination, and clerical support.
  • Support development efforts through management of donor files, contributions records, foundation and corporation research, donor correspondence, database management, and in-kind donation solicitation and management.
  • Ensure timely preparation and coordination of key activities and materials for meetings and speaking engagements as required by Leadership Team.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Two plus years of accounting/bookkeeping experience, some within nonprofit environment preferred
  • Prior experience with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Adobe Suite, specifically Illustrator preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) proficiency a plus

Teacher

Overview: OpenWorld Learning periodically has openings for part-time Teachers. These 15 hour per week positions are ideal for college students, graduate students, or others seeking fun and rewarding part-time work.

OpenWorld Learning is an award-winning after-school and summer educational program serving children in Denver’s Latino community. OpenWorld Learning teachers turn school computer labs which would otherwise sit locked and empty during after school and summer hours into fun and challenging learning communities. The program serves children in grades 3-5. OpenWorld Learning teaches art, animation, writing, and advanced computer skills, and trains teams of Student Leaders to teach their peers.

OpenWorld Learning provides extensive training and support to its teachers who become part of a dedicated, professional, and fun-loving team. We seek teachers who have an excellent rapport with children and who embody the qualities we work to develop in our students. These include: creativity, a love of learning, compassion, a strong work ethic and a sense of fun. Prior teaching experience is NOT required.

Duties:
  • Assist in managing day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Fill in for Site Leader in the event he/she is absent during program hours.
  • Master and teach the OpenWorld Learning curriculum.
  • Become adept in the use of MicroWorlds, MIA, Microsoft Office, Internet research, multi-media presentations, and use of peripheral computer equipment (scanners, digital cameras, printers, jump drives).
  • Lead teambuilding efforts within the site during Team Building Energizers
  • Assist in maintaining a high quality site that meets or exceeds organization’s expectations.
  • Support behavior expectations for students and assure proper consequences are used when addressing behavioral issues.
  • Submit all required documentation on a timely basis.
  • Assist in maintaining participant records and update database on a daily basis.
  • Assist in supervising and training site volunteers and student leaders
  • Demonstrate professional behavior at all times to provide a positive role model for staff and students.
  • Attend weekly and monthly meetings as required.

Requirements: Strong teamwork, leadership, and people skills. Experience with children through babysitting, mentoring, coaching, or teaching. Strong computer skills. Strong interest in Latino community. Spanish language skills welcomed, but not required.

Compensation/Hours: Starts at $10/hr. Position averages 15 hours per week (Monday-Thursday 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, additional meetings, planning, and training on Friday afternoons). After gaining experience with OpenWorld Learning, teachers are frequently promoted to Site Leaders in our growing organization.

Site Leader

Overview: OpenWorld Learning periodically has openings for part-time Site Leaders. These 20 hour per week positions are ideal for college students, graduate students, or others seeking fun and rewarding part-time work.

OpenWorld Learning is an award-winning after-school and summer educational program serving children in Denver’s Latino community. OpenWorld Learning teachers turn school computer labs which would otherwise sit locked and empty during after school and summer hours into fun and challenging learning communities. The program serves children in grades 3-5. OpenWorld Learning teaches art, animation, writing, and advanced computer skills, and trains teams of Student Leaders to teach their peers.

OpenWorld Learning provides extensive training and support to its teachers who become part of a dedicated, professional, and fun-loving team. We seek site leaders who have an excellent rapport with children and who embody the qualities we work to develop in our students. These include: creativity, a love of learning, compassion, a strong work ethic and a sense of fun. Prior teaching experience is NOT required.

Duties:
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Master and teach the OpenWorld Learning curriculum.
  • Become adept in the use of MicroWorlds, MIA, Microsoft Office, Internet research, multi-media presentations, and use of peripheral computer equipment (scanners, digital cameras, printers, jump drives).
  • Maintain high quality site that meets or exceeds organization’s expectations.
  • Set behavior expectations for students and assure proper consequences are used when addressing behavioral issues.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with key school personnel.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance.
  • Recruit participants by working closely with school personnel.
  • Submit all required documentation on a timely basis.
  • Maintain participant records and update database on a daily basis.
  • Supervise and train site staff, volunteers, and student leaders
  • Demonstrate professional behavior at all times to provide a positive role model for staff and students.
  • Attend weekly and monthly meetings as required.

Requirements: Strong teamwork, leadership, and people skills. Experience with children through either formal or informal settings required. Prefer candidate with strong computer skills and an interest in the Latino community. Spanish language skills welcomed, but not required. Prior teaching or management experience not required, but preferred.

Compensation/Hours: Starts at $12/hr. Position averages 20 hours per week (Monday-Thursday 3:30 pm - 6:45 pm, additional meetings, planning, and training on Friday afternoons).

Assistant Teacher

Overview: OpenWorld Learning’s periodically openings for Assistant Teachers are perfect for high schoolers. These 15-hour-per-week positions offer students with a love of learning an opportunity to work with children in a fun and challenging environment.

OpenWorld Learning is an award-winning after-school and summer educational program serving children in Denver’s Latino community. OpenWorld Learning teachers turn school computer labs which would otherwise sit locked and empty during after school and summer hours into fun and challenging learning communities. The program serves children in grades 3-5. OpenWorld Learning teaches art, animation, writing, and advanced computer skills, and trains teams of Student Leaders to teach their peers.

OpenWorld Learning provides extensive training and support to its teachers who become part of a dedicated, professional, and fun-loving team. We seek assistant teachers who have an excellent rapport with children and who embody the qualities we work to develop in our students. These include: creativity, a love of learning, compassion, a strong work ethic and a sense of fun. Prior teaching experience is NOT required.

Duties:
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to OpenWorld Learning students and assist OpenWorld Learning teacher with implementation of the OpenWorld Learning program
  • Learn the basics of the MicroWorlds software taught in OpenWorld Learning labs
  • Learn to use scanners, printers, and digital cameras.
  • Teach basic MicroWorlds skills to OpenWorld Learning Students
  • Extend your own MicroWorlds skills through OpenWorld Learning training and self-study and by developing your own MicroWorlds projects
  • Inspire students to develop personally meaningful projects for each level of the OpenWorld Learning curriculum using MicroWorlds and Microsoft Word.
  • Inspire and train OpenWorld Learning Student Leaders to teach their peers.
  • Help create a fun environment by bringing new ideas for break-time activities, snacks, and field trips

Requirements: High school student. Work-study eligible with award letter. Flair for teaching and working with young people, good computer skills, and demonstrated ability to learn new computer skills.

Compensation/Hours: $7.30/hour. 15/week.
