OpenWorld Learning Celebrates Student Innovation and Technology

Saturday, May 31, 2008: OpenWorld Learning and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science hosted 437 3rd-8th grade students and their families from OpenWorld Learning's after-school program for an End of Session Celebration on Saturday, May 31 that recognized the semester long efforts of OpenWorld Learning's students. Students from 13 Denver Public Schools and 1 Boulder Valley School District Elementary School presented their MicroWorld projects, digital arts creations and robotics designs, and the top projects in each of the following categories were recognized as ePortfolio winners: Computer Programming, Art & Animation, Writing and Integrated which includes elements from all three categories.

Archuleta Elementary School Vice Principal DiMarco participated in the student presentations, and he commented on, "the wonderful partnership that has been established between OpenWorld Learning and Archuleta Elementary School. Given the program's success, we are looking forward to expanding the program next year and making it a tradition at our school. OpenWorld Learning is especially good for non-native English speakers because they not only learn computer programming, the program helps boosts students English and writing skills." Parent and student interest is so great at Archuleta Elementary School, that OpenWorld Learning will serve twice as many students next year through a rotation model that will allow more of the 47 students who are currently waitlisted to have access to this fun and challenging program next year.

OpenWorld Learning is a Colorado-based non-profit organization that is partnering with business leaders and public schools to develop an educational model for the Information Age. OpenWorld Learning supports children's school success by tapping the power of digital technology and peer teaching to ignite a love of learning and leadership, and OpenWorld Learning's programs engage disadvantaged students who might not otherwise have access to technology. Its programs have directly served more than 2,500 students to date, including 878 who received more than 93,000 program contact hours in 2007 - the highest total number in a one-year duration.

Through the End of Session Celebration, OpenWorld Learning was able to honor the exceptional work of OpenWorld Learning students, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science partnered with OpenWorld Learning by providing free admission to OpenWorld Learning's students, parents, teachers and principals.

About OpenWorld Learning: Through an innovative educational curriculum, students learn advanced computer skills, including computer programming.
